MISSION
AFAHO provides health, human and educational services and programs to the African and
Caribbean immigrant and refugee communities in the greater Philadelphia area. These services include a variety of health education, case management, and psychosocial wellness programs which are available to the community regardless of age, nationality, language ability, or legal status.

JOB SUMMARY:

SUMMARY OF POSITION

As an Education Intern at AFAHO, you will aid with the African Youth Empowerment Program (AYEP); an after-school program for African and Caribbean immigrant youth aimed at improving their health, social and educational outcomes. AYEP provides homework assistance; tutoring; mentoring; life skills; health information; field trips and other programming to participants. The intern will provide much-needed assistance to the program manager to ensure the implementation of program deliverables.

Role & Responsibilities:

Structure & Time Management
The education intern (EI) will be responsible for assisting in ensuring adherence to program structure and time management to enable students to stay on task, complete assignments and vacate the building in a timely manner.

Planning & Facilitation
The EI will have the opportunity to engage in the planning of program activities including field trips, health and life skills workshops etc. The EI will work alongside co-facilitators and managers to assist in engaging students who may not have homework in relevant activities such as STEAM, mentoring, or researching areas of interest including applying for scholarships, college essays and applications, researching jobs/internships, writing resumes, etc.). The EI will help facilitate workshops, prepare materials ahead of time and provide direct assistance during workshops. The EI will also organize nutritious meals and snacks for students.

Promotion & Organization
The EI will assist in promoting upcoming workshops by designing flyers and sharing them with AYEP students & external partners. The EI will take pictures and videos during workshops for use on AFAHO’s social media and other internal and external communication. The EI will assist in ensuring accurate documentation of student attendance and participation in activities.

Mentoring & Tutoring
The EI will demonstrate professional demeanor by modeling good behavior and professionalism to students by building good rapport while staying within professional lines. The EI will act as a mentor in cases where students may need it. The EI will support students with assignments, projects, and help them prepare for tests, etc.

Required Skills:

College student (preferably majoring in Education or Social Work)
Full training will be provided by the Manager of Education Programs
