MISSION
AFAHO provides health, human and educational services and programs to the African and Caribbean immigrant and refugee communities in the greater Philadelphia area. These services include a variety of health education, screenings and linkage to care, case management, adult education, youth activities and psychosocial wellness programs which are available to the community regardless of age, nationality, language ability, or legal status.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
AFAHO’s Manager, Education programs, provides management and oversight to all the Education programs to ensure deliverables are being met, resources are being mobilized and personnel are being utilized appropriately. This position represents a blending of both programmatic/hands-on project skills with administrative/management skills, and the manager is expected to be able to function well in both capacities. The ideal candidate must be able to effectively supervise staff, interns and volunteers internally as well as network externally at multiple levels with a diverse community of providers, partners and community members. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated team player who is highly organized; comfortable working in a multi-cultural environment; responsive to deadlines; takes initiative to accomplish tasks with minimal supervision and flexible. This program requires someone who is an excellent facilitator; possesses advanced writing and public speaking skills; has experience preparing and submitting program reports; is innovative and has great interpersonal skills. The Manager, Education programs will have access to sensitive and confidential AFAHO and client information and is expected to handle such information with integrity and professionalism.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Serve as AFAHO’s education program representative in dealings with various public, nonprofit, and private organizations, agencies, and institutions related to health, education and social programs. • Plan and manage the design and implementation of education program goals, objectives, activities, and outcomes.
- Manage data collection and evaluation protocols for the Programs.
- Conduct evaluation, analysis and quality improvement activities to ensure program effectiveness and relevance.
- Provide direct oversight and supervision to the Education Program staff and relevant interns and volunteers.
- Develop and submit grant proposals and other donation requests and seek out other resources to support the programs.
- Establish and maintain relationships with cross sector partners and external collaborators to promote the goals of the Education Department.
- Provide high level advocacy with external partners related to client and organizational needs.
- Assess gaps and make recommendations for areas of improvement in the education programs.
- Prepare and submit programmatic data and narrative reports internally and externally.
- Lead the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures, resource guides, SOPs and other helpful tools.
- Provide direct client services including programming facilitation, participant support and other client-facing activities.
- Complete special projects specific to the function of the programs or as needed for the organization.
- Develop a volunteer coordination process along with the Program Assistant.
- Assist in developing job descriptions and hiring program staff.
- Collect and verify invoices from contractors and present for payment.
- Organize and implement related program events and activities, securing resources and partners as needed.
- Represent AFAHO at relevant meetings, conferences etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years in progressively responsible and varied program coordination or management.
- Ability to plan, develop and implement programming, staff training, policies, and procedures, etc.
- Flexibility and adaptability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
- Advanced interpersonal skills to effectively, professionally, and compassionately interact with diverse co-workers, clients, community members and external partners.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives from external agencies and institutions and other leaders within the target population to advance the mission of the organization.
- Grant and report writing experience.
- Strong commitment to supporting the collective efforts of the team in accomplishing program objectives and goals.
- Supervisory experience required.
- Excellent self-direction and the ability to take ownership and drive responsibilities through to completion.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision
- Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.

- Although work is primarily indoors, you will be required to travel outside to client and community locations.
- Travel in and around AFAHO’s service delivery area to support delivery of services to clients.
- Position may require occasional trips to attend conferences seminars, and meetings.
- Certain visits or work-related appointments might be scheduled outside of traditional work hours as necessary.
